If you have old files in your workshop, don’t throw them away - you will get practical and convenient nippers out of them. For this homemade work it is necessary to use ordinary rectangular flat files (triangular and round will not work).

Of the main tool in this case, you will need a semi-automatic welding machine, a power drill and a grinder with a cutting disc and grinding wheel.
First of all, we get rid of the wooden file handles (if any), after which we need to combine the two canvases for symmetrical processing in order to speed up the work process. To do this, grab files on both sides using electric welding. In this case, during the processing of the canvas will not move to the side.

The main stages of work

Using a pre-prepared paper template (pattern) of the desired shape, carefully outline the contours on the file surface and cut out two “paired” blanks of the same size using a grinder with a cutting disc.

After this, it is necessary to treat the surface of the files with a grinding wheel. To make it easier to drill a hole for fasteners, the workpiece is first heated red-hot, and then cooled naturally.

Then you can safely proceed to the finishing stage of surface treatment, giving the workpieces an aesthetic appearance and the necessary shape. It is also important to harden the tool - for this, we again heat both billets red-hot, and then immerse them in used oil.

When the two halves of the tool are completely ready, they need to be joined together, insert a bolt of suitable diameter into the hole, cut off the excess part and rivet it. Such home-made pieces will serve faithfully for more than one year.
