Neither a drill, nor a puncher, nor a screwdriver without a chuck can work. Moreover, this node is very busy. Each time the tool is changed, it must be untwisted and twisted again. It transmits torque in the forward and reverse direction, and also perceives all longitudinal loads from the interaction of the tool with the workpiece. Therefore, it is not surprising that the drill chuck may wear out and cease to fulfill its functions.
Having made the decision to replace the chuck unsuitable for operation, it is necessary to purchase a new one, but it must be similar, paying particular attention to the type of thread - it can be metric (Russian production) and inch (foreign production).
How to remove an old cartridge
Typically, chucks mounted on the spindle with a thread are additionally secured with a left-handed screw for reliability. For this reason, the cartridge must begin to be removed by loosening this screw. Before turning it out, a path should be cleared to it. To do this, the cams of the cartridge must be removed as deep as possible.
If you now look into the cartridge, you can see in the center of the bottom a screw head under a Phillips or star-shaped screwdriver. To prevent unscrewing this screw, it is made with left-hand thread. So it should be unscrewed by rotating the screwdriver to the right side, after having clamped the assembly into a bench vise.
It is possible that the screw slots have clogged over the years of operation and for them to be caught with a screwdriver, rotating it, at the same time, it should be easily tapped with pliers or a hammer on it until you feel the hook.
After removing the screw with left-hand thread, we insert the hex wrench into the cartridge and tighten it.
We clamp the free side of the hexagon in the jaws of a vice and, using a suitable open-end wrench, tear off the nut on the drill, with which the chuck is fixed to the tool spindle.
After that, you can release the L-shaped hexagon from the vise and rotate it to the left, completely unscrew the clamping unit from the spindle shaft.
How to install a new cartridge
We twist with the help of hands, turning to the right, a new cartridge on the thread of the drill spindle, until it rests against the clamping nut with its bottom.
We fix the hexagon in it and clamp its free end into a vice. Then, using the open-end wrench, tighten the clamping nut to the right until it stops and remove the hex key from the cartridge.
Now it remains to screw in a screw with a left-hand thread into the hole in the center of the bottom, using a screwdriver with the corresponding bit. The cartridge must first be clamped in a vice, and the cams should be removed inside as much as possible.
In order to make sure that the cartridge is replaced correctly, we check whether it sits firmly on the tool, and the drill is simply and firmly fixed. Test drilling showed that the tool works like new. So it is completely tidied up and can work for its intended purpose.
